Community Participation
by People with Disabilities:
How Do We Measure Up?

A State of the Science Conference

October 28-29, 2010
Kansas City, MO
Sheraton Overland Park (Kansas) Hotel

This state-of-the-science conference is designed for researchers, policy makers, consumers,
and advocates of independent living.

Keynote speaker: Al Condeluci, PhD

CEO, United Cerebral Palsy of Pittsburgh

Full community participation by people with disabilities is a core element of the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research’s (NIDRR) long range plan. The recent publication of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) has also drawn attention to the concept of participation as a gold standard for outcome measurement in independent living and rehabilitation.

For the past four years, the Research and Training Center on Measurement and Interdependence in Community Living (RTC/MICL) has been developing measures and interventions to enhance full community participation by people with disabilities. In this State of the Science conference, RTC/MICL researchers and others engaged in similar projects will gather to discuss results, obstacles and the next steps.

“Community Participation by People with Disabilities: How Do We Measure Up?” is designed to bring together researchers, policy makers, service providers and consumers to explore the latest findings in the areas of independent living, rehabilitation, health care, measurement process and outcomes, participation and access for people with disabilities (physical accessibility, access to services), advocacy, administration, and related topics.

This conference is sponsored by RTC/MICL, a five-year NIDRR-sponsored project. The conference will precede the annual conference of Association of Programs for Rural Independent Living (APRIL), scheduled for Oct. 30-Nov. 1, so participants can attend two conferences with one trip.
