    RTC Research Featured in Chancellor's Video

    Reichard and Colleagues Publish Diabetes Research

    Amanda Reichard is lead author for "Quality of diabetes care for adults with physical disabilities in Kansas," which was published in Disability and Health Journal (Vol 5, No. 1, January 2012).     CDC Recognizes Kansas for Emergency Preparation Work

    In its weekly "Have You Heard?" the CDC recognized our partnership with the Kansas Disability and Health Program for influencing changes in state policy for establishing and operating emergency medical shelters to better support people with disabilities.

    Dot Nary Wins Switzer Fellowship

    Congratulations to Dot Nary, PhD, RTC research associate, on winning the Switzer Fellowship from NIDRR to study visitability for wheelchair users. Read more.

    New Center on Community Living Receives $4.5M in Funding

    The RTC/IL has received a five-year, $4.25 million grant from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research to help people with disabilities live in and participate more fully in their communities. Read more.

    Emergency Preparedness Train-the-Trainer Course Offered

    "Planning for Disaster-Related Risk and Functional Needs of People with Disabilities: Train-The-Trainer" is now available online through the TRAIN education system. Read more.

    Amanda Reichard's Research Featured by KU

    The Center's research director has found that preventive screenings and care for people with disabilities could benefit Medicaid as well as the individuals themselves.     Hurricane Katrina Research Wins Award

    RTC/IL Director Glen White accepted an award on March 25 for the paper "The Psychosocial Impact of Hurricane Katrina on Persons with Disabilities and Independent Living Center Staff Living on the American Gulf Coast." Read more.

    Scholars from South Korea Visit RTC/IL

    Two researchers have come to KU's RTC/IL in 2011 to learn more about independent living in the U.S. Kyung Mee Kim is an International Visiting Scholar for the Spring and Fall 2011 semesters. Read more.
         Heekyoung Chong, a doctoral student, spent 10 days in Lawrence to gather information for her research about the Korean disability movement. Read more.

    Living Well with a Disability Participants Share Their Tales

    Living Well participants Dianne Bradley and Veronica Thigpen shared their experiences with visiting staff from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on March 2. Read more.

    Online Training Offered for Healthcare Providers "Healthcare Access for Persons with Disabilities"

    This free online course for healthcare professionals is designed to provide a better understanding of health, wellness and care issues for people with physical and sensory disabilities. Read more.

    Glen White Named a "Man of Merit"

    Living Well with a Disability Program Featured in "KU Works for Kansas"

    The Living Well with a Disability program is featured in this annual publication produced by the University of Kansas. (See "Getting better at living well".) Anita and Paul Bjorling of Eureka discuss the benefits the health promotion program has had in their lives.

    RTC Director Highlights Kansas Rehab Council Achievements

    Glen White completed his tenure as chair of the State Rehabilitation Council of Kansas this year. See his introduction to the 2009 Annual Report from Kansas Rehabilitation Services.

    RTC Director Published in Leading Journal, New Textbook

    Glen White has an article in Journal of Disability Policy Studies,20(4) 233–240. “Moving from Independence to Interdependence: A Conceptual Model for Better Understanding Community Participation of Centers for Independent Living Consumers” is co-authored with Chiaki Gonda, graduate research assistant at the RTC, Craig Ravesloot, Jamie Lloyd Simpson and Zach Coble.
         He also wrote a chapter titled “Ableism” that is included in the book Community Psychology: In Pursuit of Liberation and Well-being, 2nd ed., edited by Geoffrey Nelson and Isaac Prilleltensky, Palgrave Macmillan: United Kingdom, 2010.

    Muriel Saunders Featured on “Kansas Health: A Prescription for Change"

    RTC/IL researcher Muriel Saunders developed the Good Behavior Game, which benefits both kids and educators.

    MS Researcher Alexa Stuifbergen Visits RTC

    picture of Alexa StuifbergenAlexa Stuifbergen, PhD, RN, FAAN, visited the RTC/IL in December through a Big 12 Faculty Fellowship. She is Dean ad Interim at the University of Texas-Austin School of Nursing.

    Stuifbergen has been involved in research related to health promotion for persons with disabilities for more than 15 years.
